Charles E. "Shep" Sutton

35th Star Publishing was saddened recently to learn that one of our authors, Charles E. Sutton, had passed away. Mr. Sutton had penned the memoir of his adventurous life, They Called Me Shep. His nephew, author/historian Terry Lowry, had assisted him with editing, and we had the honor and privilege of being his publisher.

Allen Clower, descendant of Captain Alfred Mallory Edgar

Thank you to all who stopped by to visit with us at our booth at the West Virginia Book Festival on October 13 and 14 at the Charleston Civic Center. We were honored to have Mr. Allen Clower, descendant of Captain Alfred Mallory Edgar. Mr. Clower displayed several of the historical items that belonged to Captain Edgar, and that have been passed down through his family. Among those items were prominent sections of the original handwritten manuscript of Captain Edgar, which we were honored to publish as My Reminiscences of the Civil War.

History of the 12th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry
A modern reprint of this compelling regimental history is now available.

The history was originally published in 1892 by the veterans of that Civil War unit. The new version contains the original text, as well as an index, a complete regimental roster, and a list of the unit’s Medal of Honor recipients.

Also included is an additional manuscript titled “The Story of Andersonville and Florence,” by James N. Miller, a member of the regiment.

The book covers all of the battles and campaigns in which the unit participated, including Winchester, New Market, Piedmont, Snicker’s Ferry, Kernstown, Berryville, Opequon, Fisher’s Hill, Tom’s Brook, Cedar Creek and their dramatic attack on Fort Gregg at Petersburg.
